An Austin Comedy Phil-osophy | HOW TO BOOK A COMEDY SHOWCASE :

Facebook post from 2/5/18:

I asked Phil Parker (Host/Booker) for a spot (even just a fiver) on either of his two monthly showcases almost a month ago (Jan 12).

Even though I’ve…

πŸ’ƒπŸ» Known him for 5 years and did the open mic/small showcase circuit with him for two years

πŸ’ƒπŸ» He was a close family friend and “uncle” to my children during the 3 years I was on mom hiatus and one of the first people I told about what was really going on

πŸ’ƒπŸ» He helped me get back into the scene after the state stole my children by showing and bringing me to the mics he frequented and introducing me to fun new comics like Chad Fisher

πŸ’ƒπŸ» I helped him re-vamp and improve his Sidewinder flyer/poster and informed/taught him why I believe it’s important to put the names of the comedians he’s showcasing on his ads as well tagging them on the FB event (promote the comedians you’re showcasing)

πŸ’ƒπŸ» I offered to help him organize his booking records and to social media-ize the fuck out of his showcases, which he accepted because I suppose he trusted my comedy and social media skillz/experience enough to believe I was capable of improving this part of his comedy-ing

πŸ’ƒπŸ» We have probably done at least two of the same open mics every week since November so he knows I do at least that many a week…

πŸ‘±πŸ»He requested that I send him video because he hasn’t heard any of my new stuff 🎀

SO! πŸ‘πŸΌ I complied πŸ˜‡ and sent him 5 audio recordings of a week’s worth of open mic sets (I did more than that, but I left out my super sad mister Tramps set and one where I made the mistake of putting my phone in my pocket so you couldn’t really hear anything) – one on Monday and the rest on Thursday – but I’m pretty sure he still hasn’t found the time to listen to any of them.

Sooo! πŸ‘πŸΌ I’m hoping by supporting local comedy, my local comedian folk, and one of two monthly Phil Parker Comedy Productions tonight (instead of getting two mics worth of stage time that I very much want and need), I’ll finally be deemed worthy enough for him to listen to the material he requested and maaaaaaybe he’ll deem me worthy enough for at least a five min filler set at one of his two monthly showcases πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€žπŸΌπŸ™‹πŸ»

So like, has everyone who has done a set on one of Phil Parker’s showcases have to go through this vigorous vetting system?

I mean, I assume this is what EEEEEVERYONE needed to do, cause that’s how comedy works, right? But it just seems to me like this isn’t what everyone else had to do in order to be deemed worthy for a tight 5-10…but what do I know?

Just wondering! Figuring out how white males believe comedy works (stomping on the females) is fun!
